2 It is said that in 1284 John Peckham, who was then Archbishop of Canterbury, issued a set of Injunctions to Merton College requesting the College to make available the standard dictionaries of the day:

"We desire that you acquire copies of Papias, Hugutio, and the Summa of Brito, to be kept chained on a decent table somewhere so that all may have free access to them".
